The sharing platter

The Rawana Mix Fried: One Platter for the Middle of the Table

The Rawana Mix Fried is Rawana's signature sharing platter: chicken, pork, wurstel, prawns, cuttlefish, fish, crab and potatoes, fried and tossed together in a house sauce. It is built for a table of three to six people and served as a single centrepiece, and costs €65.

Some dishes are ordered. This one is announced.

What's actually in it

  • Prawns and cuttlefish — The sweetness. They take the house sauce best
  • Crab — The reason people take a photo
  • Fish — Firm, fried, holds up in the mix
  • Chicken and pork — For the half of the table that came for meat
  • Wurstel — The fusion wink — a Sri Lankan-Milanese joke that works
  • Potatoes — Fried, in the sauce. Quietly the best thing on the plate
  • House sauce — The part we're not writing down

Everything is fried separately and brought together at the end so nothing goes soft.

Who it's for

A table of four to six. This is the dish for the night when the group has been trying to find a date for a month and finally managed it. It arrives once, in the middle, and the meal organises itself around it.

Someone hosting. If you're the person who chose the restaurant, this is the dish that makes the choice look correct within thirty seconds of it landing.

A first Sri Lankan meal. Nothing on it needs explaining. You eat it, then you get curious about the rest of the menu.

How to build a meal around it

  • The platter in the middle.
  • One kottu — the seafood chopsuey version works well against the fried richness. (What kottu is.)
  • One coconut curry with rice — you want something saucy and slow next to something fried and fast.
  • A green or a sambol to cut through it.
  • Watalappan at the end, because everyone will claim they're full and then eat it.

Four people, that order, lands around €100–130 total. Average spend at Rawana is €20–35 per guest.

Ordering it for a group

For six or more, tell us when you book — the platter is made to order and larger tables are better served with two smaller platters spaced apart than one enormous one, so the food stays hot. Group booking advice: how to book a group dinner or birthday in Milan.

Two practical notes

Allergies. The platter contains shellfish, crustaceans, fish, pork and gluten. It cannot be meaningfully modified — if someone at the table can't eat one of those, order them their own dish rather than trying to adapt the platter.

Timing. It takes longer than a single plate. Order starters — beef cutlets, fish rolls, gamberi kataifi — to cover the gap. As one guest put it in a Google review: *"Perhaps a little slow, but that's consistent with the quality of the freshly made food."*

Come and eat it, rather than read about it.
